Client
Free Saudi Activists is a coalition of women human rights defenders and organizations advocating for the immediate and unconditional release of Saudi women’s human rights activists from prison. The coalition is comprised of Women’s March Global, Civicus, Gulf Center for Human Rights, Equality Now, Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain, and the International Service for Human Rights.
Job
Our job was to create a visual identity and strategy that speaks to the mission and scope of the work being done by the coalition.
Strategy
For the coalition’s logo, we wanted to find a way to show a mix of international human rights work, grassroots activism, striving for peace, and focused on freedom from oppression and imprisonment. To accomplish this, we incorporated the following:
Dove to symbolize peace as well as connote international human rights work
Painted wing of the dove to make it feel more hand-made, suggesting more grassroots activism focus
Broken chain to show freedom from oppression and imprisonment - often the dove is holding an olive branch, but it felt more uniquely relevant and powerful to replace this with the broken chain, making it more active and progress-driven.
We did not want the color palette to reflect either the Saudi Arabian flag colors, nor the branding of any of the coalition member organizations. We chose this blue for the above reasons and maintained a focus on black and white to keep the branding bold and punchy.
